The Bell Lodge Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to The Bell Lodge on Melville Street, you immediately get that feeling this place is something special. It’s one of those four-star properties that doesn’t need to shout about what it offers — the quality just speaks for itself. Honestly, the moment you step inside, there’s this welcoming atmosphere that makes you forget you’re staying at what’s technically a commercial establishment. The staff genuinely seem happy to see you, which isn’t always a given these days.
Location & Neighborhood
I mean, Sandown itself is already a gem on the Isle of Wight, but The Bell Lodge sits in what I’d call the sweet spot of the town. You’re close enough to everything that matters — the beach, local shops, decent pubs — but far enough from the tourist chaos that you can actually relax. Melville Street has this quiet residential feel, and you know what? Couples absolutely love it here, which makes total sense when you experience how peaceful the area gets in the evenings. The neighborhood offers an ideal balance for those seeking both accessibility and tranquility.
The Room Experience
The beds here are honestly some of the most comfortable I’ve encountered in a long time. I’m usually pretty particular about mattresses (too soft and my back complains, too firm and I toss all night), but they’ve somehow nailed that perfect middle ground. Each room feels thoughtfully put together rather than just decorated — there’s actual attention to detail in the lighting, the storage space, even the way the windows frame the view. It’s those little touches that make you realize why this place scores so highly with guests. The furnishings and layout demonstrate genuine care for guest comfort.
Breakfast & Dining
The breakfast situation here is actually impressive — they’ve got everything from a proper Full English to Continental options, plus they accommodate vegetarians and even do American-style breakfast if that’s your thing. What I appreciated most was the quality of ingredients; you can tell they’re not just buying the cheapest bacon and calling it a day. The restaurant area has this relaxed morning vibe where you can take your time without feeling rushed, which is exactly what you want when you’re on holiday. The culinary offerings reflect a commitment to guest satisfaction.
Why Guests Love It
There’s free parking right on site, which might not sound exciting but trust me — when you’re dealing with Isle of Wight traffic and trying to find a spot in town, it’s a genuine relief. The whole place just works smoothly without any of those annoying little issues that can derail a good stay. Recent guests consistently rate the location nearly perfect, and after spending time here, I completely understand why. It’s that rare combination of being well-positioned, well-run, and genuinely comfortable that makes you want to come back. This property truly delivers on every front.

We would give it a 20 out of 10, as it exceeded our expectations. Emma and Gordon made our stay an incredibly enjoyable experience.
Emma was very friendly and attentive, offering us valuable travel advice. Our family stayed in three rooms, all of which were immaculate, with high-quality toiletries provided.
The location is perfect, conveniently situated between the train station and Sandown Pier, just a short walk in either direction.Great place to stay! – Gwen from United Kingdom (10/10)
I received a wonderfully warm welcome from Emma and Gordon when I arrived. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The accommodation was exceptionally clean with a modern decor. Breakfast was tasty and plentiful. It was good to have access to a guest lounge to relax in. The B&B is located not too far from the station and there are bus stops nearby – handy for trips to Shanklin etc. The beach is also a short walk away. I will definitely stay again if I revisit the Isle of Wight.

Gem of a hotel in Sandown – Jones from United Kingdom (10/10)
The hotel was very clean and comfortable, the owners were brilliant hosts anything you needed they were happy to assist. Breakfast was one of the best full English breakfasts I've had and plenty of choice. The room we stayed in had a sea view and view of the Downs. The room had almost everything you needed for your stay if there was anything else then Emma, the host was happy to help. The mattress was very comfortable. The bathroom was spotlessly clean, nice sized shower. There was even hair straighteners in the bag with the hairdryer and a decent sized television. The hotel itself was very easy to get to and not too far away from the sea front and had plenty of parking which is a big plus.
They have a lovely communal area and outdoor space although we were on the IOW for the Festival so didn't get much time to use either and the space itself is very inviting and comfortable.
There are leaflets and guides near the front door for guests to use all in all id 100% recommend the hotel to others and definitely stay there again.First Class Guest House – Karen from United Kingdom (10/10)
