Villa Lavinia Overview

First Impressions

When I first pulled up to Villa Lavinia in Ventnor, I honestly wasn’t expecting much — but this four-star boutique hotel completely caught me off guard. Tucked away on Alexandra Gardens, it’s got this elegant Victorian charm that feels both grand and welcoming at the same time. The fact that there’s parking right on-site was already a win in my book, especially since finding a spot anywhere decent on the Isle of Wight can be a proper nightmare during peak season.

The Perfect Ventnor Location

You know what really struck me about this place? The location is absolutely spot-on — and I mean that literally, since it scored a perfect 10.0 for location. Villa Lavinia sits in what locals consider the best part of Ventnor, just a stone’s throw from the Botanic Garden and close enough to the beach that you can actually hear the waves on quiet evenings. I found myself walking down to the seafront every morning, and it’s maybe a three-minute stroll through some lovely residential streets. The whole Alexandra Gardens area has this peaceful, almost secluded feel while still being right in the heart of everything that matters in Ventnor.

The Room Experience

My room had that classic seaside hotel vibe but with modern touches that actually worked well together. The windows were generous — I mean, proper Victorian-sized windows that let in loads of natural light and gave me glimpses of the sea through the trees. What I appreciated most was how quiet everything was, despite being so central. The furnishings felt thoughtfully chosen rather than just standard hotel issue, and honestly, the bed was comfortable enough that I didn’t want to get up for my morning walks (but the sea views eventually won out).

Activities and Amenities

Here’s where Villa Lavinia surprised me most — they’ve got a tennis court on the property, which I wasn’t expecting at all. I’m not much of a tennis player myself, but I watched a few guests having a proper game one afternoon, and it looked well-maintained. The hotel also arranges fishing trips and windsurfing lessons, which makes sense given how close you are to the water. I didn’t try the windsurfing (seemed a bit ambitious for me), but the fishing was actually quite relaxing, and the staff knew exactly where to point you for the best spots along the coast.

Why Guests Love It

What really makes this place work is how it strikes that balance between being refined without feeling stuffy. The staff seem to genuinely know the area — they gave me recommendations for walks and local pubs that I never would have found otherwise. I can see why couples rate it so highly; there’s something romantic about the whole setup, from the Victorian architecture to those sea glimpses to the peaceful gardens. It’s the sort of place where you can have a proper getaway without feeling like you’re in some generic chain hotel. Villa Lavinia has character, and that’s honestly harder to find than you’d think these days.
