First Impressions

When I first pulled up to The Lakes Rookley, honestly, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like a countryside retreat on the Isle of Wight. But you know what? Sometimes the most unassuming places surprise you the most. This five-star property sits right on Main Road in Rookley, and while that might sound busy, it’s actually perfectly positioned — close enough to everything but tucked away in this gorgeous rural setting that feels worlds apart from the mainland hustle.

The Setting

The location is honestly what sold me on this place. I mean, couples absolutely rave about it for good reason — there’s something genuinely romantic about being surrounded by the island’s rolling countryside while still having easy access to the coast. The parking situation is brilliant too (and free, which is always a win), so you can actually explore the island properly without worrying about your car. What really struck me was how quiet it gets in the evenings — you’re far enough from the tourist crowds but close enough that a quick drive gets you to Ventnor or the Needles.

Luxury Done Right

The room I stayed in was exactly what you’d expect from a five-star property, but without all the pretentious nonsense. Everything felt genuinely luxurious — the linens, the bathroom fixtures, the attention to detail — but it wasn’t stuffy or intimidating. Actually, the whole place has this relaxed elegance that works perfectly for the island setting. The views from most rooms look out over the surrounding countryside, and if you’re lucky enough to get one facing the right direction, the sunsets are absolutely spectacular.

Dining and Amenities

The restaurant here deserves special mention — they really focus on local Isle of Wight produce, which makes sense given how much amazing stuff the island produces. I had some of the best seafood I’ve tasted anywhere, and the wine list actually features several local vineyards that I’d never heard of but was pleasantly surprised by. The spa facilities are top-notch too, though I’ll admit I spent more time exploring the island than lounging around the hotel. Still, after a day of hiking the coastal paths, those treatment rooms were exactly what I needed.

Look, there are plenty of luxury hotels on the Isle of Wight, but what makes The Lakes Rookley special is how it manages to feel both indulgent and authentic. Recent guests consistently rate the location highly, and I completely understand why — you’re getting that proper countryside experience without sacrificing any comfort or convenience. It’s the kind of place where you can have a genuinely relaxing break while still being close enough to all the island’s attractions that you don’t feel like you’re missing out on anything. Plus, the staff actually know the area well enough to give you proper recommendations, not just the standard tourist suggestions.
