When I first pulled up to The Hambrough on that winding road in Ventnor, I honestly wasn’t expecting much from the outside — it looks like a charming Victorian townhouse rather than your typical five-star hotel. But that’s exactly what makes this place so special. You’re not dealing with some massive chain property here; this is intimate luxury done right, perched on the cliffs of the Isle of Wight with views that’ll make you forget you’re still in England.

The Location Magic

Here’s what I love about Ventnor — it’s got this microclimate thing going on that makes it noticeably warmer than the rest of the island. The Hambrough sits right in the sweet spot of the old town, where you can actually walk down to the beach in about five minutes (though it’s a proper steep walk back up, fair warning). The couples I met there weren’t wrong to rate the location so highly — there’s something romantic about being tucked away on this cliff-top spot while still being close enough to pop down for fish and chips or a pint at one of the local pubs.

The Room Experience

I’ll be straight with you — the room I stayed in was compact but absolutely gorgeous. We’re talking boutique luxury here, not sprawling suites, but every detail feels considered. The bed situation is no joke either; I mean, I’m usually a terrible sleeper in hotels, but I actually slept through the night without waking up once. The sea views from most rooms are the real showstopper though — you’ll find yourself just standing at the window with your morning coffee, watching the ferries come and go from Portsmouth.

Dining Highlights

The restaurant downstairs is where things get really interesting. It’s got this Michelin-starred reputation, and honestly, it lives up to the hype without being stuffy about it. Breakfast is particularly impressive — they’ve got everything from full English to vegan options, plus they actually know how to handle gluten-free requests properly (which, let’s be honest, isn’t always a given). The continental spread is lovely too, but when you’re on the Isle of Wight, you sort of have to try the full English at least once.

The staff genuinely seem to enjoy working there, which makes a huge difference in the overall vibe. Plus, there’s free parking right at the hotel — and if you’ve ever tried to park anywhere decent in Ventnor during summer, you’ll know that’s worth its weight in gold. It’s the kind of place where you can have a proper luxury experience without any of the pretension, and the location means you’re perfectly positioned to explore the island’s best bits while having a genuinely special base to return to each evening.

  A very spacious and comfortable room with wide balcony with table and chairs overlooking the sea and small harbour. As usual with many British seaside hotels the furniture / bathroom fittings were perhaps a little 'tired' but nothing out of the ordinary and perfectly acceptable. An unusually excellent shower. The food in the restaurant was superb and if staying be sure to book a table for dinner – we phoned ahead but only got an early booking as it was full (Saturday). Breakfast choice and quality was excellent. The staff were delightful.
  Ventnor is a fine and quite eccentric place with seemingly a lot of (benign) witchcraft going on. We arrived during The Ventnor Fringe, attended a hilarious comedy show and paid a visit to the beautiful Botanical Gardens – highly recommended.
