The Chequers Inn Overview

First Impressions

Honestly, The Chequers Inn caught me off guard in the best possible way. You know how sometimes you book a place on the Isle of Wight and worry it might feel a bit too remote? Well, this four-star gem in Rookley actually strikes that perfect balance — tucked away enough to feel like a proper escape, but you’re never really that far from anywhere on the island. The building itself has this classic English pub-meets-boutique hotel vibe that immediately puts you at ease. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to settle in and stay awhile.

Location & Getting Around

I mean, couples absolutely rave about this spot for good reason. Rookley sits right in the heart of the island, which honestly makes it brilliant for exploring — you can reach the dramatic coastline at Ventnor in about fifteen minutes, or head north to Newport just as quickly. There’s free parking right on site, which is actually a bigger deal than you might think when you’re lugging suitcases and don’t want to hunt for spaces. The village itself is pretty quiet, but that’s sort of the point when you’re trying to unwind. The location truly offers the best of both worlds for island visitors.

The Room Experience

Here’s what really impressed me — the beds are genuinely exceptional. I’m usually a light sleeper, but I slept like a log every single night. The room felt thoughtfully designed rather than just decorated, if you know what I mean. Everything from the lighting to the little touches showed someone actually cared about the guest experience. The bathrooms are modern without feeling sterile, and there’s proper storage space for your things. You’ll find yourself genuinely comfortable throughout your stay.

Breakfast & Dining

The breakfast situation here is actually quite impressive — they’ve got everything from a full English spread to continental options, plus they properly cater to vegetarians and vegans (which isn’t always a given at traditional English inns). The restaurant serves solid pub fare with some elevated touches, and the portions are generous without being overwhelming. I particularly appreciated that they source locally when possible — the Isle of Wight has some fantastic producers, and it shows in the quality. The dining experience reflects genuine attention to detail.

Why Guests Love It

What really sets this place apart is how effortlessly it combines that cozy English inn atmosphere with genuinely modern comfort standards. You get the character and charm you’re hoping for — the kind of place where you can settle in with a pint after a day of coastal walks — but you’re not sacrificing comfort or convenience. The staff genuinely seem to enjoy working there, which always makes a difference in how welcome you feel. Plus, with that 9.3 rating, you know other guests are having the same positive experience I did. This is a destination worth choosing.
