Walking up to Sundowners in Ryde, you immediately get the sense this is a place that knows its audience. This four-star property sits in a spot where you can actually breathe — none of that cramped city hotel feeling here. The building itself has character without trying too hard, and honestly, the fact that there’s parking right on site already puts it ahead of half the places I’ve stayed on the Isle of Wight.

Ryde’s got this interesting thing going where it feels like a proper seaside town but isn’t completely overrun with tourist traps. You’re close enough to the ferry terminals that getting here from Portsmouth is straightforward, but far enough from the main drag that you won’t be dealing with crowds every time you step outside. The beach is an easy walk, and I mean actually easy — not that “five-minute walk” that turns into twenty when you’re carrying bags.

The Room Experience

The room I stayed in had that sweet spot of being comfortable without feeling like they were trying to impress you with unnecessary frills. Good bed, proper shower pressure, and — this matters more than you’d think — windows that actually open for fresh air. The decor leans traditional but not in that stuffy way some seaside hotels can get. You know what I appreciated? Enough outlets near the bed and a desk that’s actually usable if you need to get some work done.
