First Impressions

Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to Pebbles Lodge, Seal Bay Resort — it’s tucked away in Medmerry, which feels like the edge of the world in the best possible way. The four-star property sits right on the coast near Selsey, and you know what struck me immediately? The silence. Well, except for the waves, obviously. There’s something about arriving here that makes you slow down instantly, probably because you’re surrounded by nothing but marshland and sea views stretching toward the Isle of Wight.

Location & Setting

The location is genuinely special — I mean, you’re basically staying in a nature reserve. Medmerry is this fascinating bit of rewilded coastline where they deliberately breached the sea defenses back in 2013, creating these incredible salt marshes that are now teeming with wildlife. From Pebbles Lodge, you can walk straight onto the coastal path, and I spent hours just watching the birds (the birdwatching here is actually phenomenal if you’re into that sort of thing). Selsey town is about ten minutes by car when you need supplies or a proper pub meal, but honestly, the isolation is the whole point.

The Accommodation

The lodge itself feels more like a well-appointed beach house than a traditional hotel — which works perfectly for couples looking to properly disconnect. My room had these huge windows facing the water, and I found myself just sitting there with morning coffee, watching the light change across the marshes. The interiors are clean and contemporary without being sterile, sort of that modern coastal style that doesn’t try too hard. What I really appreciated was the attention to comfort — proper blackout curtains for sleeping in, a decent shower with good pressure, and heating that actually works (crucial when you’re this close to the sea in England).

Practical Perks

Here’s something that matters more than you’d think — the free parking right on site. When you’re staying somewhere this remote, you don’t want to worry about where to leave your car, and there’s plenty of space here. The staff genuinely seem to know the area well, too. They pointed me toward the best walking routes and even mentioned tide times without me asking, which suggests they actually understand why people come here. It’s those small touches that make you feel like you’re staying somewhere that gets its own location rather than just operating a generic hotel that happens to be by the coast.

I can see exactly why couples rate this place so highly — there’s something inherently romantic about being this close to the elements together. You’re far enough from civilization to feel like you’ve escaped, but comfortable enough that you’re not roughing it. The combination of dramatic coastal scenery and genuine peace makes it perfect for those weekends when you want to remember why you like each other’s company. Plus, if you time it right with the tides and weather, the sunsets from here are absolutely worth the drive down to this quiet corner of West Sussex.

  Great location. Clean and tidy. A fantastic, surprise welcome gift in the fridge, which we enjoyed very much! Everything was there that wee needed for the stay.
  
  There are lots of facilities on site, restaurants, pool, funfair etc but as we were working at Goodwood for the duration of our stay, we didn't have time to experience anything apart from sitting on the beach (which is beautiful).
  
  Another reviewer mentioned that there was no ironing board. When we arrived, a brand new ironing board is now at the property so the hosts are willing to fix any issues that visitors have.

  The lodge location was excellent as it was so close to the pebble beach and sea, you just had to look out of the patio windows or step onto the veranda to be transported to a beautiful place. This made our stay a great pleasure indeed.
  We had a few short walks onto the beach, which was very refreshing.
  
  The lodge layout worked great, the ensuite bathroom is a great plus off of the main bedroom with its walk in shower, quite roomy too which we did not expect, we also had ample wardrobe space, two side drawer units and a dresser not forgetting the double bed.
  The second bedroom had two single beds, wardrobe, dresser and a drawer unit.
  
  The main bathroom again good size and includes bath with overhead shower.
  
  The kitchen was well equipped and a pleasure to use, Including dishwasher, double oven, microwave, fridge freezer and washer dryer etc.
  
  The living space was a great size too including a sofa bed, two armchairs, coffee table, side table and dining table area. There is a tv on the wall above the fire.
  
  Facilities around the complex cover a great variety of entertainment for your children.
