Number 1 Admiralty Cottages Overview

First Impressions

You know what struck me first about Number 1 Admiralty Cottages? It’s not actually what you’d expect from the name — this isn’t some quaint little cottage tucked away in the countryside. Instead, you’re looking at a beautifully converted property right in Alverstoke, and honestly, the location couldn’t be better if you tried. The moment I pulled up, I could see why this four-star place gets such incredible ratings from guests. There’s something immediately welcoming about it, and the fact that there’s parking right on site (which is honestly a godsend in this area) just sets the tone perfectly.

The Alverstoke Advantage

Here’s the thing about Alverstoke that most people don’t realize until they visit — you’re literally minutes from Stokes Bay and the Solent, but you’re also perfectly positioned for exploring Portsmouth and the wider Hampshire coast. I mean, you can walk to the waterfront in about ten minutes, and the views across to the Isle of Wight are something else entirely. The village itself has this lovely, almost village-y feel despite being so well connected, and there are some genuinely good pubs within walking distance. Actually, couples seem to absolutely love this spot — and I can see why, because there’s something quite romantic about the whole setup.

The Room Experience

The room I stayed in was spacious and thoughtfully designed, with that perfect balance between modern comfort and character that’s surprisingly hard to find. What I really appreciated was the attention to detail — proper blackout curtains (you’ll thank me for mentioning this if you’re a light sleeper), excellent water pressure in the shower, and furniture that actually makes sense for how people use hotel rooms. The bed was genuinely comfortable, not just hotel-marketing comfortable, and there’s enough storage space that you don’t feel like you’re living out of a suitcase.

Dining and Local Flavors

While there isn’t a restaurant on site, this actually works in your favor because Alverstoke has some fantastic dining options within easy reach. The Royal Oak is practically around the corner and does excellent pub food, and if you’re willing to venture slightly further, the seafood places along the coast are genuinely worth the trip. I found myself grabbing breakfast at a lovely little café about five minutes’ walk away, and honestly, it felt more authentic than the typical hotel breakfast experience. Plus, having that flexibility means you’re not tied to hotel dining schedules.

Why Guests Love It

That 9.5 rating isn’t just a number — it reflects something real about this place. The combination of the excellent location, the genuine warmth of the service, and the fact that everything just works as it should creates this almost effortless experience. You’re close enough to everything that matters — the waterfront, good restaurants, transport links — but far enough from the tourist crowds that you feel like you’ve discovered something special. It’s the kind of place where couples come for romantic weekends (and I can absolutely see the appeal), but it would work equally well for anyone who appreciates quality accommodation in a genuinely lovely setting.

A home away from home. It was comfortable, clean and homely, and Sally and Jon were most welcoming. The location is also ideal for going into Gosport and Southampton, and we popped across to the Isle of Wight too. Would definitely stay again!
