First Impressions

You know what strikes you first about Fern Cottage? It’s not trying to be anything other than what it is — a beautifully restored Victorian cottage that happens to be one of the best places to stay on the Isle of Wight. Located right on Queen’s Road in Bembridge, this four-star gem sits in what locals consider the sweet spot of the village. I mean, you’re literally a two-minute walk from the harbor and close enough to hear the boats bobbing at their moorings, but far enough back that you’re not dealing with any harbor noise.

The Village Setting

Bembridge itself is honestly one of those places that feels like a secret — even though it’s not really. The village has this laid-back sailing community vibe that’s completely different from the busier spots like Cowes or Ryde. From Fern Cottage, you can walk to the Bembridge Lifeboat Station in about five minutes, and the windmill (which is actually worth seeing) is just up the road. The whole area feels properly English seaside without being touristy, if that makes sense.

Inside the Cottage

The room I stayed in had this perfect balance of period charm and modern comfort — exposed beams overhead, but thankfully a proper shower and decent WiFi. The owners have clearly put thought into the details; there’s a small kitchenette area that’s actually useful, not just decorative. What I really appreciated was the quality of the bed linens and the fact that the heating works properly (you’d be surprised how often that’s an issue in older properties). The whole place feels like staying in a well-loved family home rather than a commercial operation.

Local Life and Activities

Here’s something you might not know — Bembridge has some of the best crab sandwiches on the island, and you can get them from the little deli just down from the cottage. The beach at Bembridge Ledge is about a ten-minute walk, and it’s one of those spots where you can actually find fossils if you’re into that sort of thing. For sailing enthusiasts, the harbor is absolutely perfect for watching the comings and goings, especially during the summer regattas. Even if you’re not particularly nautical, there’s something quite soothing about the whole scene.

Why Guests Love It

I think what makes Fern Cottage work so well is that it gives you a genuine taste of island life without any of the usual holiday accommodation compromises. The location really is exceptional — close enough to everything that matters in Bembridge, but tucked away on a quiet residential street where you can actually get a good night’s sleep. Couples seem to particularly love the place, and I can see why. There’s something romantic about the whole setup, from the cottage garden to the fact that you can walk hand-in-hand down to the harbor for dinner. It’s the kind of place that makes you consider whether you could actually live somewhere like this full-time.

  Fern Cottage is a wonderful place to stay! Exceptionally clean, well maintained and super comfy!
  On arrival we found a lovely little welcome pack in the fridge containing a pint of milk and locally produced cheese, bread, butter and tomatoes that were absolutely delicious. The cottage is very spacious inside and the furniture is fabulous with little personal touches everywhere. The beds were all comfortable with good quality sheets and bedding! The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you would need to cook just as you would at home. There is a lovely rear garden that unfortunately due to the rainy weather we did not have the opportunity to use!
  I would definitely stay here again and most certainly recommend to friends!
