Elmside, The Luxury New Forest Retreat Overview
First Impressions
You know what hits you first when you pull up to Elmside, The Luxury New Forest Retreat? It’s not actually the building itself — though that’s lovely enough — it’s this immediate sense that you’ve escaped somewhere properly special. The four-star property sits tucked away on Ashlett Road, and honestly, the moment you step out of your car, there’s this almost tangible quiet that settles around you. It’s like the New Forest has wrapped itself around this place, creating this perfect little cocoon that feels miles away from the Southampton bustle, even though you’re technically still close enough to civilization.
Location & Setting
The location is genuinely something special — I mean, couples consistently rave about it, and after spending time here, I completely get why. You’re positioned right on the edge of the New Forest, which means you can literally walk out the door and find yourself on proper woodland paths within minutes. What’s clever about Elmside is how it manages to give you that deep-countryside feeling while keeping you surprisingly accessible to Southampton and the surrounding area. The retreat sits in this sweet spot where you feel properly removed from everything, but you’re not actually stranded if you need to pop into town or catch a train somewhere.
The Accommodation Experience
The rooms here strike this really nice balance between comfort and character — they’re not trying too hard to be trendy, but they’re thoughtfully designed with this understated elegance that works perfectly with the forest setting. I particularly appreciated how they’ve managed to make each space feel both cozy and spacious, which isn’t always easy to pull off. The attention to detail is what you’d expect from a quality four-star place, but there’s something more personal about it here. Maybe it’s the way the windows frame views of the surrounding woodland, or how the furnishings feel chosen rather than just ordered from a catalog.
The New Forest Connection
What really sets Elmside apart is how genuinely connected it feels to the New Forest itself. This isn’t just a hotel that happens to be near some nice countryside — it’s a place that actually embraces and celebrates that forest location. You’ll find yourself naturally drawn to explore the area, whether that’s wandering the ancient woodlands, spotting the famous New Forest ponies, or just sitting quietly somewhere and listening to absolutely nothing but birdsong. The staff here actually know the area properly too, so when they suggest a walking route or recommend a local pub, they’re speaking from real knowledge, not just reading from a script.
Why Guests Love It
There’s something about Elmside that just works, especially for couples looking for that proper getaway feeling. Recent guests consistently highlight the location, and honestly, once you’ve experienced it, that makes complete sense. It’s the kind of place where you find yourself naturally slowing down, where conversations happen over longer dinners and morning coffee stretches into the afternoon. The retreat manages to feel both intimate and liberating — intimate in scale and atmosphere, but liberating in how it connects you to this beautiful, ancient landscape that surrounds it. You leave feeling like you’ve actually had a break, not just a change of scenery.

As a family of 4 adults and 3 children (all under 4 years of age), we had the pleasure to stay at Elmside for 4 nights last week.
We were met at the property by our extremely helpful host Jordan who had lit the firepit for us , in advance to our arrival. He showed us around and explained how the appliances worked, and supplied a welcome pack for our use, which was a nice touch. Jordan was only a phone call away and responded quickly to any queries.
Elmside really is a well located and impressive property with sufficient parking for at least 4 cars. The kitchen is very well equipped and the adjacent leisure area with sofa, TV and pool table is huge. The lounge with 2 dining tables and work space was equally impressive.
All of the bedrooms were clean and of generous sizes. Any one of them could accommodate the 2 travel cots we took with us without compromising space. The downstairs bedroom, with access to the outside space, would be useful for anyone who found stairs difficult.
The garden is enclosed, private and secure. The garden furniture and climbing frame were real benefits, and the hot tub was a big plus.
There is plenty to do in the immediate area and we visited Calshot and the popular Lepe beaches; Longdown Adventure Farm; Paulton Park; Lymington and Bucklers Hard – all within a short drive from Elmside.
Overall, we had a splendid stay and would not hesitate in recommending this accommodation to others.Ok – Venu from United Kingdom (6/10)
