First Impressions

When I first pulled up to 4 The Bayhouse on Chine Avenue, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from an apartment-style accommodation. But you know what? This place completely changed my perspective on self-catering stays. The Bay House building itself has this lovely Victorian charm that fits perfectly with Shanklin‘s seaside character, and finding parking right on-site was such a relief — I mean, anyone who’s tried to park near the beach in summer knows what a game-changer that is.

Location & Neighborhood

The location score of 9.9 isn’t just marketing fluff — it’s actually spot-on. You’re literally a two-minute stroll from Shanklin’s gorgeous sandy beach, and the famous Chine (that’s the wooded gorge that gives the avenue its name) is right there when you want to escape the crowds. What I loved most was how you could walk to the Old Village for dinner, then pop down to the esplanade for evening drinks without needing the car once. The cliff-top position means you get these amazing sea views, but you’re still close enough to hear the waves at night.

The Space

This four-star room setup really works well for couples — and I can see why they rate it so highly. The apartment feels much more spacious than a typical hotel room, with a proper seating area where you can actually relax with a cup of tea and plan your day. The kitchen isn’t huge, but it’s got everything you need if you want to grab some local produce from Shanklin market or just make a quick breakfast before heading out. The décor strikes that perfect balance between seaside charm and modern comfort — think coastal blues and whites without going overboard on the nautical theme.

Practical Perks

Having stayed in plenty of Isle of Wight accommodations over the years, I can tell you that the little things here really add up. The free private parking alone probably saves you £10-15 a day compared to the public car parks, and there’s no stress about finding a spot when you come back from exploring. The apartment setup means you can come and go as you please — no checking in with reception or worrying about disturbing other guests. Plus, being able to store your beach gear and rinse off sandy feet in your own space makes those long beach days so much more enjoyable.

Honestly, for a romantic getaway or just a peaceful break by the sea, 4 The Bayhouse hits all the right notes without any of the fuss you sometimes get at larger hotels.

  Lovely property in fantastic location, restaurants and beach a 5 minute walk away. Upon arrival, the sofa bed was not made up, there was also a problem no running hot water. Maintenance was easy to contact and sorted out straight away by calling a plumber out to sort out the boiler. Despite these hiccups, I would stay again.

  This was an apartment so we catered for ourselves but the kitchen facilities were excellent (apart from a lack of oven gloves!). Loved sitting out on the balcony and the beds were super comfy. Great en suite shower and bath.
